Tribology is defined as the science and technology of interacting surfaces moving in relation to each other, and associated problems.

All elements of a tribosystem and their interactions have to be known and considered for optimum problem solving.

When selecting the intermediate material -the lubricant- the environmental aspects like dust, temperature or humidity and the parameters given by design (type of materials, kind of surface and geometry of frictional elements) are of same great importance as operational topics as speed, load or vibrations.
